Single/double tap stopped working on my Dell laptop 3k series. I had shut the lid of laptop, and when I opened it, I found the touchpad had stopped working. I rebooted the machine by command line.
I have a nice new Dell laptop but am a bit frustrated by one thing: it’s the first computer I’ve owned where if I accidentally tap or touch the trackpad surface the computer thinks it’s a mouse click. Messes me up left and right. How can I disable this “tap to click” behavior on the Dell trackpad (touchpad? whatever)? Oh, and it’s running Windows Vista, if that matters.
I’m not sure when that started to be popular, but just about all trackpads now seem to have the ability to detect taps in addition to sliding fingers, so it’s quite common now to find computers – Mac and PC – that have the capability you’re talking about. Heck, on the latest Apple MacBook line, there’s no button at all: the trackpad is both the dragging and tapping surface. Definitely something you have to get used to, but once you do, it’s pretty cool. You’ll now see the many, many different ways you can customize your Vista experience. You want “Mouse” settings (why there’s no “Mouse / Touchpad” or similar I don’t fully understand, just as it’s puzzling that there are Tablet options when my laptop isn’t a tablet and doesn’t support that functionality. That’s another story, though). You’ll be dropped here: Not really what you want, but we’re getting there. Click on “Dell Touchpad” on the top left and you’ll find that this is all just an elaborate path to get to the special Dell trackpad/touchpad control app: Click on the huge arrow icon and you’ll launch a separate application supplied by Dell that lets you gain complete control over the touchpad: Almost there. Now click on “Touchpad Settings”. There we go. Finally. See where it shows “Taps” “Tap to Click”? Just uncheck that box and click on “Apply” on the lower right and you’ve disabled the tap to click capability of your Dell trackpad. Close the windows and you’re done. I’ll wrap up by suggesting again, however, that you try to get used to the feature now so you don’t fall further and further behind as PCs evolve with their user input devices. Good luck either way, though! Let’s Stay In Touch!
I do have a lot to say, and questions of my own for that matter, but first I'd like to say thank you, Dave, for all your helpful information by buying you a cup of coffee!
Afterwards, I found that the touchpad's single/double taps have stopped working, also two finger to right click is also not working, but strangely enough two finger scroll is working.
This laptop is dual boot between Win-10 and Ubuntu 16.04. So I rebooted into Windows and found no issue with the touchpad.
If I try to log in using another user id/guest id the touchpad works without any issue. Is there a way I can revert or bypass any settings related to touchpad to solve this issue?

I just bought a Dell Inspiron two weeks ago. I find that the double tap will occasionally (and inexplicably) stop working and all my efforts to tap using my mouse result in highlighted text or other annoying, unintended actions. I searched for a fix and found nothing helpful. Luckily, I stumbled on a quick and seemingly effective fix.
Right click on your screen and you will get a dropdown. Hit 'Select All' and then double tap on your mouse pad area. That's it! Your mousepad should work again.

12 month asq se spanish. Hello everyone!
My problem, as I wrote in the title, is that my touchpad seems to have a problem. It worked fine this morning, but I some point, I couldn't click on anything. I have a Toshiba Satellite with windows 7.
I can still move the mouse around with the touchpad, but I have to 'manually click' on the buttons underneath the touchpad to left or right click on something. It's driving me crazy!! I am used to just click or double click on the touchpad itself and I can't figure out why it won't work all of a sudden. I tried turning my computer off and on again, but for once it won't work.. Any idea why this is happening? Thank you!
Have you checked via 'Mouse' in Control Panel, that the settings to enable this haven't got altered for some reason?
Yes I did, and nothing is changed in the settings. I tried changing them myself to see if it would work again, but nothing does..
Go to control panel and go to: Ease of Access section and click on the little window where it says: Turn on Mouse Keys. Assuming U R using a laptop just tap in the top of the mouse control box if there is a check mark in that little box. If it doesn't work right away try re-starting ur pc and see if the mouse keys are working. But before U do that go to: Mouse Setting and click it and a popup window will show. Click where it says: Settings and the rest is self explanatory.
italy8868, are you using Synaptic drivers? Sims 4 mods not working. Maybe 'Enable tapping' was inadvertently uncheck in your mouse settings. In your Mouse properties >'Device Settings > Settings >Tapping check 'Enable tapping' then press ok.
Thanks! The option 'Tap to click' was enabled, but when I disabled it, restarted and re-enabled it, it worked again! God, I'm so happy right now ;)
